The collapse of the Ottoman Empire and the European partition of its territories more or less defined the borders of what we now know as the nation-states of the Middle East and North Africa.

As a consequence, the composition of each country’s society is a mixture of different heritages comprehending both the imperial and the colonial past, together with the impact of modernity and its technological revolution.
