Trade routes crossed the Arabian Peninsula in ancient times, running from the south to the north, and from east to west, between Mesopotamia, the Levant, Egypt, and the southern part of the Mediterranean on the one hand, and Asia and Africa on the other. The routes ran across land, used by camel caravans, and over sea via the Persian Gulf and the Red Sea.
Through a marriage of military power and clever diplomacy, Abdulaziz al-Saud – better known as Ibn Saud – succeeded in creating the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia in 1932. The exploitation of huge oil reserves has enabled Saudi Arabia to play an important role in regional and world politics.
