The Tunisian film industry and cinema is one of the most liberal and famous in the Arab world. Many companies have filmed in Tunisia, most famously for the Star Wars series, some parts of which were filmed in the Tunisian Sahara. Tunisian theatre grew significantly during the French protectorate, and several theatres appeared during the 19th and 20th centuries. Only one theatre from that time is still operating, the Municipal Theatre of Tunis, which during recent decades, has presented many famous shows; several famous actors have performed on its stage. Since the revolution, the theatre and some actors have been attacked by ultraconservative Salafists. On 2012 World Theatre Day, for instance, several actors were attacked at the Municipal Theatre of Tunis, and some cinemas have been attacked in protest of films considered blasphemous.
