The most important traditional sport, now somewhat outdated but still celebrated in festival competitions, is traditional wrestling (güreş). Modern sports, such as basketball and volleyball, are also popular, but they cannot compete with football, which involves several teams of Istanbul (including Galatasaray, Fenerbahçe, and Beşiktaş) and the provinces (including Trabzonspor). Football always brings out passion, including the mobilization of ultra-nationalists. The history of Turkish football has been marked in recent years by scandals, especially match-fixing involving millions of dollars.
