Editorial Note

The collapse of the Ottoman Empire and the European partition of its territories more or less defined the borders of what we now know as the nation-states of the Middle East and North Africa.

As a consequence, the composition of each country’s society is a mixture of different heritages comprehending both the imperial and the colonial past, together with the impact of modernity and its technological revolution.

Fanack’s extensive society features and insights archive covers an analysis of each society in the region, in its various aspects including culture, religion, population, and more.
